Eighteen years ago, I started a global branding and marketing company. Social media and technology is 24/7, so it's easy to get caught up in it, but you don't have to let it run your life!
My advice is to pick some things you enjoy doing and do them really well. You can't be everywhere all the Latest Mailing Database time, so choose high-impact activities that work for you and build on your strengths.
For example, content marketing and thought leadership are great ways to build your brand, increase awareness more broadly, boost your profile and attract more clients/clients. Activities like speaking at conferences, writing articles, building a following on social media all help increase your awareness of potential clients and build credibility with the larger community.
Instead of trying to create your own blog or newsletter, try to regularly contribute to an existing high-traffic blog or newsletter of like-minded organizations in your industry to reach the same target audience as you. Make sure to put your URL or contact information on it so they can find you and follow up.
When your article or lecture is available online, make sure to send it to all your friends, followers and contacts via social media. Don't let social media drive you crazy, you don't have to be omnipresent, it doesn't matter which platform you choose, just choose one or two that are true to you.
It should look and sound similar to you and the brand you've built. Whether you're refined or informal, chatty, academic, humorous or cunning, it's a way of expressing your personality.
Everyone is not going to like or hire you, but for the people who are the best for you, make sure they feel and stay connected, and give them a reason to remember you so they will think of you first when they need your help.
Start small and take it with you. For me, I started speaking at local events, then submitted proposals to speak at industry conferences and trade shows nationwide, and eventually at global events. The same advice applies to writing, start with small publications and work your way up the food chain to reach a larger audience.
People need to be on LinkedIn to be found. It adds credibility and transparency when you get to know people you want to know or with whom you know. LinkedIn is no longer just an online resume or rolodex, it is the foundation for building trusted relationships in the digital economy.
You don't need to blog or be on all social media platforms, but make sure you're active where you are. If your customers aren't using Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram to find you, it doesn't need to be a priority. For many professional services firms like mine, LinkedIn is the most important.
These ideas don't require a huge budget, but they do take time. Doing this is a wise investment.
